Developing a solid wardrobe can be challenging. Trends are ever-changing, and different styles go in and out faster than you can say, “Have you seen ______ in this month’s Vogue?” Despite all of the craziness that surrounds fashion trends, there are a couple staple pieces that will never go out of style. Fashion crisis, consider yourself averted.
A Plain Long-Sleeved Black Shirt
A good long sleeved black top will suit you for many different occasions because they’re so versatile. They match with just about anything, and most of the time, you can find a good one for a fairly cheap price. Whether you fancy a black turtleneck sweater, a cold shoulder top, or just a basic long sleeved tee, you can’t go wrong. Another good thing about these tops is that they come in all different styles with different necklines, shoulder cutouts, and things of that nature, so picking one that suits you best shouldn’t be a challenge.
A Pair of Trousers
Trousers are great for so many occasions. Wear them to work with a blazer, wear them with a graphic tee and converse to class… the possibilities are seemingly endless. If you want to save yourself some money, go to a thrift store. They always have good pairs of pants for reasonable prices (depending on where you’re looking, of course.)
Your Perfect Sunglasses
The likelihood of you forgetting your sunglasses on your beach chair will decrease immensely if you splurge a bit on a good pair. You don’t even have to splurge on them, just make sure that the ones you buy are versatile and suit your style. Sunglasses are not just for summer wear; the sun shines all year round, my friends. If you’re going to splurge on any accessory, let it be sunglasses. If you take good care of them, they’ll last you a lifetime.
A Good Pair of Jeans
Jeans are another piece that’s easy to dress up (as dressy as a pair of jeans can get) or down. There are so many different styles and brands of jeans to choose from, and along with those various styles and brands comes different price ranges. You can thrift your jeans, or you can get $500 jeans, but either way, no one is really going to know the difference. What matters most is that your jeans make you feel good about the way you look, so if buying $500 jeans makes you feel good, then go for it. My personal favorite jeans are the Levi’s Mile High Super Skinny Jeans (pictured below) because they’re so comfy and flattering.
Blazers aren’t totally necessary to have in your closet, but having one can take you a long way. Just having one solid-color blazer can carry you through so many different situations. You can go to a store like H&M or Zara and get a sturdy, chic one for a fairly cheap price. So, ladies and gents, grab your blazer and throw it on over any outfit to instantly look like you have your shit together.
A Denim Jacket
Denim jackets are an essential in any young person’s wardrobe. There are so many different styles and washes of denim jackets, and it really doesn’t matter what you pair your denim jacket with. Want to wear denim on denim? Channel your inner Britney and go for it. Denim is such a huge trend right now, and even if for some odd reason denim jackets go out of style, they’d make a comeback again eventually.
A Nice Belt
Black, brown, snakeskin print, metallic… whatever your preference, everyone needs a belt. Even if you don’t physically need a belt (I know you have that one pair of pants that just won’t stay up without a little extra help), they’re a great accessory and make any outfit look a little more sophisticated.
A Good, Casual Sneaker
I’m talking about converse, vans, etc. They come in so many different colors and styles, and (depending on the brand, of course) they’re super comfy. I personally really love my black high top converse. I’ve had them for about seven years, and they’re just now starting to experience some wear and tear. I think that’s pretty great considering that high tops only cost about $50. Converse are such versatile shoes and they’ll definitely serve you for a long time.
There’s no rule book that says “YOU MUST OWN ALL OF THESE CLOTHING ITEMS,” but if you’re looking for some quality, versatile pieces that will last you a lifetime, try and start a collection of these things. Splurge on them, or buy them at Walmart; it doesn’t matter. The point is that, with these pieces, you won’t ever look “out of style” and you’ll never be stuck looking into the deep abyss of your closet wondering why you “have nothing to wear.”
